Our commitments
Underserved and endangered languages often get little attention from the big language-learning platforms. At Vocapi, they’re our focus.
Endangered-language courses are free forever
Link to “Endangered-language courses are free forever”Every endangered-language course is free, permanently. That includes the lessons, spaced repetition reviews, developer API, and MCP connector. No paywalls, trial periods, or microtransactions. You get the whole course without paying.
Gaeilge (Irish) is covered by this commitment. Every endangered-language course we add gets the same permanent free access. Once a course is covered, that doesn’t change.
A library of living culture
Link to “A library of living culture”There’s more to learning a language than knowing the words and grammar. Food, music, stories, history, traditions, and local knowledge are part of what you’re learning, too.
Our living culture library is a place to bring those resources together, learn from them, and document knowledge that might otherwise go unrecorded.
In the courses, a tuned spaced repetition system called FSRS is at the heart of daily practice, alongside listening and cultural immersion. Chapters take you to real places through photographs and illustrated scenes. We want that practice to help you use the language and get to know the culture, not just spend more time in the app.
How we support the work
Link to “How we support the work”We use profits from paid courses to keep endangered-language courses free forever and to keep improving them.
As we grow, we also want to help fund the people building community dictionaries, teaching resources, and cultural archives for underserved languages. There’s important work happening beyond Vocapi, and we want to support it.
Working with communities and contributors
Link to “Working with communities and contributors”We start by listening: what work is already happening, what would be useful, and who should be involved in the decisions?
Vocapi provides the software, course tools, hosting, and technical maintenance. Speakers, teachers, and other contributors bring language expertise, cultural knowledge, teaching ideas, or resources they have permission to share. Not every partner needs to bring all of these. We work out together what makes sense.
Before using anyone’s material, we agree on the terms and put them in writing.
Ownership, credit, and payment
Link to “Ownership, credit, and payment”The agreement records who owns the material, how it can be used, how long permission lasts, how it will be credited, and any agreed payment. We keep track of sources so questions about permission, credit, or accuracy can go back to the right people.
Permission when plans change
Link to “Permission when plans change”Permission for one use doesn’t mean permission for every use. Anything outside the agreed scope needs agreement before it goes ahead. Partners can also raise concerns and ask to revisit the terms.
Review and corrections
Link to “Review and corrections”Partners help decide how their contributions are presented. Together, we agree on who reviews the material, how corrections and disagreements are handled, and when something should be removed. That process stays open after publication.
Withdrawing permission
Link to “Withdrawing permission”Before contributed material goes into Vocapi, we agree on how a contributor can withdraw permission and how removal will work. Those details belong in the agreement from the start.
AI training and resale
Link to “AI training and resale”Letting us use material in a course or the culture library doesn’t give us permission to train AI models on it or resell it to third parties. Either would require separate, explicit consent from the rights holder.
